Vishalli Loomba and Junaid Nabi Among Leaders in USA Minority Health

On April 26 and 27, eight Indian American doctors and other healthcare professionals will be among those honored, via a virtual event, as the 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health in the U.S. for 2021.

The annual list is compiled by the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) since 2016. It is a Washington D.C. based non-profit research and educational organization dedicated to ensuring that high-risk racial and ethnic populations and communities receive optimal health care.

The others on the list include 20 African Americans and two East Asian Americans.

Some Indians in the U.S. secure jobs and business contracts set aside for minorities because it is relatively easy to qualify, compared to competing with the general pool of applicants. But, unlike African Americans and other minorities, they are well educated recent immigrants from India who suffered no historical discrimination and hence are not a disadvantaged group.

Breaking this mould, the eight Indian Americans on NMQF’s 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health are indeed working to improve the health of minorities. Five of them are doctors. Sudhakar Nuti, who grew up in poverty, attended the Yale School of Medicine. He practices general medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, which is affiliated with the Harvard Medical School.

Another recipient, Vishalli Loomba, (in photo), is in the first year of a joint MD MS program at the University of California Berkeley. She has an MPH degree and her focus is on developing and implementing mental health solutions for young children who have suffered traumas.

Junaid Nabi, MD, is a senior researcher at Harvard University. He was born in Kashmir, raised by a physician father who was an ardent advocate of health equity. Growing up in Kashmir, a territory marred by political and economic conflicts, gives him a unique perspective on lending a voice to the concerns of the most vulnerable and marginalized. His current research projects include variations in presciptions of opioid drugs and the global circus of humanitarian aid.
