Cardi B.’s tweet of photos of her, in one of Gupta’s sculptural indigo electric blue gown, has gotten nearly ten million views in two days.

In addition to Cardi B., New-Delhi based Gupta’s gowns have been worn by attendees at the Oscars, the Emmys, the,Tonys and the Cannes Film Festival. They were worn by singers including Mary J. Blige and actors including Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya Rai and Jennifer Hudson.
Gupta, 40-years-old, describes himself as a “designer (who) has carved a world that is Indian at its core and boundless in its form merging indigenous Indian construction and embellishing techniques with his idea of the future.” The gown worn by Cardi B., for instance, is Gupta’s modification of the sari worn by Indian women. He transforms the sari, which at its most basic is a rectangular fabric wrapped around the body in different styles, into something markedly sexier, with a Grecian-style drape and detailing such as knotting and plaiting, Gupta told CNN.
His fashion shows have blended light design, larger than life sculptures, immersive theatre, and poetry. In 2018, Gupta started a men’s line.
Gupta founded his label in 2005, after graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London. He has five stores in India: two in New Delhi, one each in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. He also sells via Moda Operandi, a high-fashion online store co-founded by Lauren Santo Domingo, a former editor of Vogue. Items by Gupta on the site range from Flared Crepe Pants for $600 to The Sculpted Draped Cocktail Gown for $8,900.
Last month, Gupta was invited to his first presentation at the official calendar of Paris Haute Couture week organized by The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM). He is only the third Indian to be invited to the show.
Gupta told CNN, that he was boarding a plane when he found out heard the FHCM invite. “I was alone on the plane and for the next two hours, I was just looking outside and crying..This dream has been 25 years in the making — ever since I started working in fashion."
